Rationale

Initially I started this project doing scenic views around Wellington. It wasn’t until I took a drive to one of my view spots, that I could change my idea and do scenic drives. I decided to go with that idea as I also like to go out for drives with my family. I chose places like Wellington city, Lower Hutt, and Cape Palliser as these places are all in the Wellington region, but because when you go to each place they are so vastly different but have a few common similarities. I thought that the city to coast, city to suburbs, and within the city would speak to a great multiple of people if they where to see this booklet.

Late Additions

The images above are what I found in files somewhere and they are of the different ways I was trying to fit the change of my coastal one, from the fingerprint looking one to one the looked very similar to the picture on the left.
I ended up liking the last one on the right the best and that was the one that went into the booklet. I must admit i found it extremely hard to find the right blue for the picture.

These two collages are what I found in another folder, they were pretty much just doodles. But I thought best to put them in as they did help me in the design process. As much As I did not like them they helped me get to the final pieces.

Last Double Page Spread

Initially I was doing the last double page as an introduction, and it looked like this  --->

Personally as I look at it now, it looks like its trying to hard. The to pages fight for dominance, and it just looks really awkward.

I then did the above picture, and talked to Fay. She said to align it across like my other spreads and to leave the other page blank.

Then these two where developed and the bottom one was chosen as a final.

Front Cover

Before I had finished my double page spreads I played around with creating a typographic cover, I new from the start I always wanted to do a typographic cover.
I played around with the idea of type going out of the sides, but then thought I Wouldn't pursue it since it didn't really go with what I was doing in my double page spreads.

Progression of Final Covers. I wanted to stick with the yellow as pop colour because its wellingtons colours. I also thought the grey made the yellow really pop, and I didn't want to do black.

The Maps changed to fit in with the booklet. Wasn't sure how to put it into a book so created another map.

Final Double Page Spreads

I really like the font that I have used for the Main Headings, I also put it into the little location area. I think it compliment the picture.

Week 5 Tuesday

Today we had one on ones with another classmate. I found this very helpful for the design process, as it is another person looking at your work, whom of which has most likely not seen what you had developed before.
I guessed who I was partnered with and what her book was meant to be about straight away, but mine wasn’t as explicit as hers.

She thought mine initially was just scenic, but then I had to tell her it was scenic drives. I had shown a real rough copy of my booklet, as I was unable to print of my pages that morning before class.

Fay came over and had a look at each our books, I new I had been behind, and she gave me some good pointers in how to develop my double page spreads.
               – like having a little bold paragraph.
               – also to write down my points of similarity, instead of using symbols.

I went away and worked on my double page spreads, listening to what Fay had said.

After our one on ones with a classmate we had one on ones with Fay and Matt. I showed them what I had developed, both said it wasn't finished enough. It was suggested to place a line on top, on another double page I had the Locations/ Destinations of each drive and to put that underneath the line, also to put lines between the last paragraph, and to make the extra part after the question not bold.

After that feedback I went back to the drawing board.
I felt frustrated because I had did what Fay and Matt said but I felt it still needed a bit more.
A peer suggested I change the font of the heading, and the bold paragraph at the side and change it into a colour.

I chose the colours from compositions, I decided on a bold colour but one that could be legible on the white background.

It did look a lot better, I felt it had character. It was just time to find a headings font.

Week 5 Monday

We had a lectorial this morning about maps and map making. I recognised how important it was for my own booklet to have a map itself. It is key role for my booklet as it is a driving, and maps have and always be relevant for any one driving in around in the world.

I started thinking in the lectorial how was I going to tackle this and how I could make a map work in my book.

We went back to our studios and did some exercises in class on how we where going to set out our maps.
I initially started with doing a big map showing all the different routes on it, but then decided that it wouldn’t work that well because each map had a big difference in scale.

I decided then that I would do some little maps, and a big map and see which one worked best for my booklet.

After that I wanted to do the final touches on my double page spreads, I had Fay have a look at them and told what I could do to make them look better.

This is what I came up with.

It still is a bit simple what I have done, but I just wanted to see what it would look like with columns. Im not to fussed on it, and I still have to add detail into my typography.

Double Page Spreads (Simple)

I made some really simple double page spreads, and I mean simple.

New Style .2

I finally had an idea for my last destination, I got the idea to do streetlights or stoplights, and use them in way to create a compisition.
A while ago i had doodled a light post in my book and thought nothing of it. As I was streaming through my booklet I saw it again and that was how the idea came to be.

When i had created this, I new instantly that I wanted it like this, and thought it was good way to represent the city at night time.

New Style

As I kinda felt my old compositions weren't working to well together, I decided to change it up and work on some other compositions. With the leaf I made into vectors I made this. I liked this style a lot   but feel it still a little bit unfinished, I want to add another element, but I'm scared if I do it won't look as clean.
I also don't think with these compositions that my suburban drive it not coming across very strongly.

I also created one for the coastal drive. I liked the ombre of the waves. I looked at it today and the waves kind of remind me of fingerprints. I want to get feedback from other people if they think it looks like fingerprints.
I have also have created a double page spread for these compositions.

As I'm still not sure if the compositions give the idea of the road trips they are, I must admit I do like the way these double page spreads are set out. It may be simple but I think its quite effective.

Unfortunately I haven't got an idea for how to create composition for the city double page spread.

Working on Illustraiotns.

Last night I was working on creating some new collages for my double page spreads.
I tried working on the suburb one,

The first picture is the original I came up with, the flow of it didn't work well with the coastal composition. Sam told me to try and see what would like if I overplayed the leaves on the house, it still didn't seem to flow, and changed the picture. I still thought it didn't flow well. I created a new vector design of a leaf and placed it together to look like a branch. I liked the outcome and and took out the old leaves. I did the overlay and changed the opacity again. To me it still didn't feel right. I thought problem might be the road, that didn't make it seem like it flowed so I change it to be vertical. The flow felt better but I still feel its not a flowing as the coastal one.

Week 4 Tuesday

Today we didn't have a lectorial, which helped me to focus on my double page spreads. I had changed the font on my double page spreads.

I changed the headings to the same font, I do like it better that they are similar. I think it goes well with the other compositions. And created two columns.
I talked to Fay and asked what she thought about it. I had showed her the ones that had yesterdays titles and the font they had, but I had done the two columns.
I had told Fay I had changed the headings fonts. She told me she didn't like the columns since there were only about 4-5 words per line, I saw what she meant so I decided to change back to the one column.
Fay also mentioned that she felt that my compositions for suburbs and city where quite week compared to coast, I agreed with her and have to decided to change those. she said they didn't flow like the coast one.
